The design, construction and operation of laboratories and facilities are complex activities. Biological risks should be identified and addressed from concept stage, through construction and then to operation and maintenance of the facility. This can only be achieved with a structured risk management approach.

During this course the participants will be introduced to risk management principles and practical risk assessment methodologies for use in laboratory environments.

This two day course aims to address risk management principles consistent with fulfilling the requirements of the laboratory Biorisk management Standard (CWA 15793:2008), A variety of risk assessment methodologies will be discussed, demonstrated and practiced during the course, with participants taking part in simulated facility and task risk assessment sessions.

It is recommended that the participants have a basic understanding of facility technical systems and the operation of a laboratory and an understanding of CWA 15793. On request customised in-house versions of this and other biorisk management courses can be provided.

• Risk assessment within the Laboratory Biorisk Management standard (CWA 15793)
• The biorisk matrix; likelihood and consequence definitions
• Tools; risk registers, templates, checklists.
• Risk assessment methodologies and exercises (HAZOP, SWIFT, task risk assessment)
• Introduction to SIL (safety integrity level) and AR&M (availability, reliability &
maintainability)
• Introduction to quantitative risk assessment approaches
