The North Hoyle is one of three British offshore wind farms currently under construction. Wind farms are on the rise in the United Kingdom after the British government released a long awaited Energy White Paper.

The paper outlines a range of practical measures, including ambitions to double the share of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020 from the existing 2010 target of 10 percent. In the wake of the White Paper, British authorities have granted concessions for three new offshore wind farms to be built. A number of other offshore wind farm permits are expected in the near future.

DNV's job for Vestas covers design verification of the grouted connection between the wind turbine and the foundation. In addition, DNV will carry out type approval of the Vestas 3 MW wind turbine, the company's largest. Located off the North Wales coast between Prestatyn and Rhyl, the North Hoyle Offshore Wind Farm will consist of 30 wind turbines. The project will generate enough electricity each year to meet the equivalent annual demand of some 50,000 homes.

Furthermore, DNV has been selected for the project certification of the Kentish Flats Offshore Wind Farm also in the UK.
